On Wednesday August 19th 2009, Mrs Prydwen Jones of Rowen was presented with a "Wales Volunteer of the Year Award" by the Mayor of Conwy County Borough, Mr. Glyn Jones.
Below is part of the citation that gained Mrs. Jones this award, one of only three in the county this year.
"From the first revival of the village carnival 40 years ago, Mrs. Jones has been a prime member of the Carnival Committee in Rowen. She has served in all positions within the committee and for most of the time has been an executive member. She is also a key person in running the village Sunday school, a volunteer helper with the children's reading at the local primary school and a key person in the village children's Sports Day event.
The annual carnival unites the village in working together in order to have a memorable day. It also brings in several hundred visitors who spend in the village economy. Surplus income from the event is donated to local charities and over the years has amounted to many thousands pounds. The sports day is a major encouragement for young people to come together and participate in a healthy and fun activities.
It only takes one person to set an example and encourage others to participate in order for people to come together, provide a benefit and unite a community."
